Bio
I’ve been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. The art world is a place of immense freedom where anything is possible, but like any other profession it takes self-discipline, focus, and lots of hard work to make a living doing it. The majority of my professional career has been spent at Stanford University where I was a medical and scientific illustrator for 27 years. I probably produced over 10,000 pieces of work during that time ranging from charts & graphs, diagrams, murals, signs, abstract art, certificates and photo retouching to surgical illustrations, brochures, posters, cartoons, logos, and conceptual drawings and paintings. The wide variety of work both forced and allowed me to work in many different styles and media. The computer age brought new tools and challenges, and today I enjoy working on my Mac every bit as much as I enjoy the feel of pencil, paint, and brush. Technical skill is not enough though, excellent client service includes listening, analysis, and thoughtful interpretation.
It feels good to be of service, I like to see my clients satisfied beyond their expectations. I also enjoy encouraging the young or beginning artist, and I like to emphasize the three P’s - perception, perspiration, and perseverance! I will close with one of my favorite art stories: A visiting artist painted a quick study of flowers and a bumblebee for the students in an art class. One student came in late and asked him, “How long did it take you to paint that bee?” The painter replied, “Thirty years.” |
